Basma al-Sharif is a Palestinian artist who developed her practice nomadically. Working between cinema and installation to create lyrical, intricate and multilayered pieces, al-Sharif weaves disparate landscapes into human experience. Relying on cinematic tropes and narrative story telling, her works defy our expectation of either in place for a newly coded way or reading what cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Selected exhibitions include: Los Angeles Nomadic Division (2021); MOMA: Modern Mondays NYC (2020) SALT Galata, Istanbul (2020); Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (2019); Yebisu, Tokyo (2019); Mosaic Rooms, London (2018); Sharjah Art Foundation (2018); Whitney Biennial (2017); Nottingham Contemporary Gallery (2017); Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival, Cairo (2016); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2015); CATE at the Gene Siskel Film Center, Chicago (2014); Darat El Funun, Amman (2012); VideoBrasil, São Paulo (2011), and Manifesta 8 (2010) among others.
al-Sharif has an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is currently based in Berlin.
