This season, TICK TACK transforms into a SUMMER BAR + CINEMA, a singular vision by the renowned Belgian artist, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, born 1950. Lafontaine, celebrated for her pioneering video installations in the 1970s and '80s, has established herself as one of the leading international video artists of the last century.
In her current solo exhibition at TICK TACK, Lafontaine masterfully reimagines the venue's Brutalist space as a vibrant social sculpture that doubles as a Summer Bar. This transformation takes full advantage of the venue's strategic position at the nexus of city intersections, blending various communities and the continuum of public and private spheres to craft a shared, dynamic cultural experience.
The entire space undergoes a change: the top floor and basement are re-envisioned as intimate cinemas offering complimentary screenings of Lafontaine’s films, which delve into the complex interplay of human identity caught between extremes of passion, violence, and sexuality. Meanwhile, the ground floor features her acclaimed Liquid Crystals series, a photographic journey into the ephemeral world of youth, capturing the fleeting moments of transition into adulthood on the streets of '90s Antwerp.
