The Feminine Gaze

IN-DEPENDANCE by IBASHO is proud to present ‘The Feminine Gaze’, a group exhibition featuring four international female photographers: Lisen Stibeck, Birgit Graschopf, Ingrid Dorner and Florence D’Elle. The term ‘female gaze’ emerged as a counterpoint to the ‘male gaze’, which was introduced by film theorist Laura Mulvey in 1975. Rather than reversing the act of looking, it proposes another way of seeing - one rooted in subjectivity, emotion and lived experience. In art and photography, it turns the gaze inward as much as outward, allowing the body, intimacy and identity to unfold from within rather than be defined from the outside. More than an aesthetic, the female gaze is a shifting perspective - that asks not simply what we see, but through whose eyes we are seeing. ‘The Feminine Gaze’ presents four unique and vibrant voices in contemporary photography - voices of dreamers, mothers, artists, explorers, that poetically touch upon topics charged with attention, care and creativity.
