Follie

Follie, space for the ephemeral, is an artist-run non-profit initiative based in the Peperkoekenhuisje, a historic eighteenth-century folly in Park Den Brandt, Antwerp. Follie creates space for artistic practices that embrace temporality as their core condition: works, encounters and events that exist in the moment, resist accumulation and disappear after they have taken place. The park is not a backdrop but an active part of the work—a place of passage, pause, seasonal change and spontaneous encounters. Through commissioned ephemeral interventions, intimate live events, artist residencies and participatory moments, Follie brings contemporary art into dialogue with nature, heritage and everyday life. Its belief is simple but demanding: not what remains, but what endures in experience.

The Peperkoekenhuisje functions both as an experimental space for contemporary art and as a warm, low-threshold meeting place. Alongside its artistic programme, Follie runs a small take-out bar serving coffee, natural wine, craft beer and artisanal ice cream, creating a place to pause, meet and spend time in the park. Artistic and social roles naturally intertwine as artists, visitors, neighbours and passers-by encounter one another. Follie develops its programme in dialogue with artists, the local community and cultural partners such as Jazz Middelheim and the Middelheimmuseum, with the ambition to become a distinctive place in Antwerp where contemporary art, nature and heritage meet through openness, experimentation and care.
