Antwerp Art

Welcome Into The New Year

2021

Antwerp Art wishes you all the best in 2021 and as promised, art is here for you once again, with numerous exhibitions opening in January and some more that you absolutely have to see before they end. We would also like to introduce to you in full our brand new Antwerp Art members, who'll be adding even more exhibitions and art events to your agenda:

New Members

Newchild

Newchild gallery was founded in 2020 in Antwerp, Belgium by Chandler Noah, Diego Castano and Sarah Vanwelden and serves as a physical and digital platform for both established and emerging artists by creating offbeat exhibitions, collaborating regularly with other galleries and working closely with institutions.

Newchild promotes the dialogue between fine art and other disciplines by encouraging artists and artisans to move outside their traditional areas of expression.

Office Baroque

Marie Denkens together with Wim Peeters started Office Baroque in a private apartment in Antwerp in 2007. Their initial commitment to art came from the wish to be involved in the process of selecting the art that travels from the artist's studio into the museum. Not to be "in the control room, in the museum," but more "in the kitchen with the artists," offering visibility to cultural producers, who are not yet part of the institutional and critical discourses.

Both Peeters and Denkens had been working respectively as an independent curator and critic before joining forces in 2004. Their first collaboration consisted of co directing Extra City in Antwerp, an established non-profit center for contemporary art. From 2008 thru 2013 the gallery was located in a storefront on Lange Kievitstraat in Antwerp. In November 2013 Office Baroque opened its first gallery in Brussels on Bloemenhofplein, to be followed by a second location on Ravensteinstraat. In September 2020 the gallery returned to its original location in Antwerp.

ZEIT

ZEIT is a recent addition to the Antwerp gallery scene. The new space focuses on the juxtaposition of emerging artists and post war abstract heroes. Its core collection is the result of a lifetime of discovering, gathering, assembling and arranging.

The opening exhibition BALLS! in spring 2020 showcased paintings, works on paper, prints and objects from the 1940s up to the present day, by some 20 artists and designers, with the circle as a common theme. It was followed by Filip Collin/Jo Delahaut, the first of its ‘brief: encounter’ series, in which the gallery invites a contemporary artist to explore the ZEIT collection and use it as a starting point to create new work.

BOTANICC

NICC is a non-profit artists initiative run by and for artists, an artist-run space, which today celebrates its 22nd anniversary.

The core activity of the NICC is to promote, critique, and feed the debate on the development of the artistic practice and the framework within which this takes place. We do this by developing social actions and an exhibition program, that influence each other and go hand in hand.

After leading a nomadic existence for several years, NICC has its own space since the new year in the Leopoldstraat 55, named BOTANICC. The space will not only be used for exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, debates, ... but will also serve as the NICC headquarters, with a public archive. This means that they are currently working out a program at two locations, both the Nick Lodgers space (M HKA), where the exhibition 'As Close As That' will open this Thursday, and BOTANICC (Leopoldstraat 55).

BOTANICC is open when an event is organized in the space, these will be announced on their social media and website.
