In her third solo exhibition at the gallery, Shirley Villavicencio Pizango brings together a new series of paintings and ceramics in which the self portrait takes centre stage.
Inspired by the figure of Narcissus, the exhibition considers how identity is constructed and how visibility relates to power. By repeatedly depicting herself in different roles and guises, the artist explores questions of self-representation, memory and transformation, while asking whether it is possible to claim a position of visibility without simply reproducing existing structures of power.
