Art’s Birthday 2026

Join the Muhka in celebrating the 1,000,063rd birthday of art! An evening full of performances, activities, music, drinks, and cake, held as part of EUROPALIA ESPAÑA. Free admission—everyone is welcome.

On Saturday 17 January, we set aside the dark winter days for a warm, poetic, and festive evening filled with performances, activities, music, drinks, and of course, birthday cake.

That art celebrates its birthday on 17 January is thanks to Robert Filliou. In 1963, he declared that art had been born exactly one million years earlier, when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water—coincidentally on Filliou’s own birthday. Since then, Art’s Birthday on 17 January has become a playful worldwide tribute to creativity and imagination.

Every year, Muhka celebrates this tradition in its own way. This time, the evening is part of EUROPALIA ESPAÑA, with Spanish and Belgian artists presenting a vibrant mix of performances and installations. Together, they deconstruct the basic elements of a birthday party—appealing to all five senses.
