Opening: Sunday 2 February 2025
Gert Verhoeven ° 1964 lives & works in Brussels is a Belgian multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes sculpture, installation, drawing and video. In his work, he fiercely opposes the great attention he believes today goes to the “genius” idea behind the work of art.
Verhoeven assumes a critical stance as regards (art)history, which he considers too deterministic. He rejects the choice between yes and no, between possibilities and non-possibilities. Verhoeven wants to keep all options open and so keeps his distance from categories and definitions laid down in art history.
Gert Verhoeven had important solo exhibitions at:
Xavier Hufkens Gallery, Brussels, (1996, 2002, 2005); Christine Burgin, NewYork (2000); Galleria Tucci Russo, Torino Italy, (2003); Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle, (2003); De Garage, Mechelen/CC Strombeek, Brussels, (2011); Kiosk, Ghent, Belgium 2021.
He was the first Belgian artist in residency at MoMa PS1, New York in 2000-2001.
