El Anatsui, Solo Exhibition

Axel Vervoordt Gallery is please to announce a solo exhibition of El Anatsui. One of Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists presents a new body of bottle cap work at the Patio Gallery. The exhibition will be on view from March 15 to June 21, 2025.

Growing up in the hopeful 1960s, a period of intense social and personal transformation, Anatsui has long explored themes of identity, memory, and change. His art interrogates the erosion of tradition and its survival across generations, weaving together past and present in ever-evolving forms. Over the years, he has transformed discarded materials—broken pottery, weathered wood, and, most famously, bottle caps—into striking sculptural compositions.
By weaving discarded bottle caps into expansive, shimmering tapestries, Anatsui challenges the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and textile art. His works reflect themes of globalization, consumer culture, and African heritage, turning everyday materials into powerful visual narratives. Each piece is a testament to the artist’s mastery of form and texture, creating dynamic surfaces that shift with light and movement. Through his signature technique, Anatsui transforms waste into beauty, offering a meditation on sustainability and resilience. The intricate compositions evoke traditional African textiles while engaging in a global conversation on art and society. By giving discarded materials a new existence, Anatsui creates collages of memory, where tradition is both preserved and reimagined.

More information about the exhibition will be provided soon.
