Salam Ata Sabri, Khouzayma Alwani

Hikayat

Storytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, sometimes with improvisation, theatrics or embellishment.

Every culture has its own narratives, which are shared as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation or instilling moral values. Crucial elements of stories, storytelling and storytellers include plot, characters and narrative point of view. Both artists in this exhibition Khouzayma Alwani (Syria) and Salam Atta Sabri (Iraq) are telling their own stories by drawing and painting on a way that is typical for the region of the Middle East. These two old men taking storytelling as their main theme ("hikayat" means stories in Arabic), the exhibition brings together works and stories that offer a glimpse of drawing's potential to make cultural, social, and political proposals or stories, through diverse formal processes.
