De titel van de tentoonstelling is de vraag die Ingeborg Lüscher (°1936, Freiberg) al meer dan 500 keer aan vrienden, kunstenaars, kennissen heeft gesteld om voor haar fotocamera uit te voeren: “Please do magic, whatever that may mean for you right now.”
Deze uitnodiging plaatst de gefotografeerde personen in een dergelijke situatie, waardoor zij noch op het vertrouwde glimlachen noch op andere voorspelbare uitdrukkingen kunnen terugvallen. De “magie” wordt iets oer-persoonlijk. En precies daarin ligt de schoonheid, het verrassende en de unieke kwaliteit van het resultaat.
Lüscher gebruikt voor iedere sessie 18 foto’s, waarvan ze er 9 uitkiest. Sinds 1976 is deze procedure onveranderd gebleven, en de reeks wordt tot op heden nog steeds verdergezet.
Hoewel dit omvangrijke oeuvre reeds werd tentoongesteld in verschillende Europese musea, werd het nooit eerder getoond in België. Lichtekooi Artspace en LLS Paleis zijn dan ook verheugd om de “Magician Photos” voor het eerst tentoon te stellen in België.
De tentoonstelling is een hommage aan de verbeelding en creativiteit van de mens, die op een bijzondere wijze via deze unieke vorm van portretfotografie beleefd kan worden.

The title of this exhibition is an invitation Ingeborg Lüscher (°1936, Freiberg) has already expressed more than 500 times to friends, artists and acquaintances, asking them to perform in front of her camera:
“Please do magic, whatever that may mean for you right now.”
Lüscher’s invitation puts the photographed subjects in such a new situation, that they cannot fall back on the usual smile, nor on another predictable set of known expressions. The “magic” becomes something very owned, and fully personal and it is this unique element that leads to the surprising beauty and unexchangeable quality of the result. Lüscher uses for each session 18 photos, of which she selects 9. Since 1976 this protocol has never changed, and is still on-going today.
This extensive and voluminous oeuvre has already been exhibited in many museums in Europe before, but until now never in Belgium. Lichtekooi Artspace and LLS Paleis are the first organisations to dedicate their spaces to the “Magician Photos”.
The exhibition is a tribute to people’s imagination and creativity, which can be experienced in this unconventional and unique form of portrait-photography.
