In literary texts by Paul van Ostaijen, Louis Paul Boon, Hugo Claus or Tom Lanoye, one can sometimes discern the contours of an elusive and difficult-to-define concept such as 'Belgian identity' or Belgitude.
The post-war visual arts also bear traces of a collective imaginary vis-à-vis the Belgian (non-)identity. During his artistic exploration over the past five decades, Ronny Van de Velde developed a special interest in the strategies through which Belgian artists artistically translated their identity. This exhibition shows that humour and self-mockery play a key role in this.
