Presentation A Good Circle Makes A Good Square

We are delighted to invite you to the presentation of the publication A Good Circle Makes A Good Square by Hans Demeulenaere & Samyra Moumouh, on Wednesday, 19th March 2025 at 19.30 hrs, at Tique - art space for books.

The artists will join author Angelique Campens for a discussion about the works and the publication. In addition to the book, several objects from the project will also be presented.

Hans Demeulenaere and Samyra Moumouh developed the project A Good Circle Makes A Good Square as part of an invitation by Radicale 1924 in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. The project culminated in fourteen unique objects and an artist's book. These pieces, reminiscent of Donald Judd's specific objects, challenge classification as either sculptures or design objects. Each one is carefully crafted from green, water-resistant particle board and consistently incorporates both circular and square shapes. The designs are inspired by various types of furniture, including chairs, stools, tables, and pedestals, while drawing from the works of notable creators such as Gerrit Rietveld’s iconic side table, a piece by Manfred Pernice, and a work by Constantin Brancusi.

The publication A Good Circle Makes A Good Square includes detailed drawings, dimensions, instructions, and guidelines for recreating each design independently. The book is divided into two main sections: the first features axonometric drawings of each object, while the second provides a comprehensive list of all required components needed to assemble each design using 18 mm panel material.

The authors present the designs as clearly as possible without fully adopting classical technical drawings, maintaining a certain level of abstraction. This approach invites readers to make interpretative choices when assembling the designs. Additionally, Pierre Martin Vielcazat has visually translated each design by combining its parts into a "totem."
