The Dutch artist Folkert de Jong has made an international name with life size sculptures made of polyurethane foam and expanded polystyrene - high-tech chemical materials normally used for thermal insulation in construction, manufacturing industry and household tools. The bright colors and light weight of the foam sculptures deliberately confuse the viewer with an apparent levity that is in contrast with its sinister subject. Often inspired by art-historical subjects, de Jong's grotesque figures are an unorthodox means of highlighting issues such as morality and self-destruction.
