With his paintings, Thé van Bergen does not want to bring us a synthesis of a story, but layer by layer, year by year, a 'history'. He wants to show us what happens on the canvas, and confront us with the paint and with the image from the first brushstroke or splash to the moment of the painting's completion - something that spreads over several years.
Thé Van Bergen's motifs appear in a primal form or as foundations of the image. In this way, van Bergen creates layered and multilayered images in which the act of painting and overpainting are also a theme. Thus, a ground often degenerates into a foreground, and the foreground sometimes merges into an undertone.
