Greet Billet’s installations with foil and plexiglass reflect their surroundings, including the visitors to the space, in a distorted manner. This heightens the viewer’s awareness of their own presence and their interaction with the artwork. Every movement alters the perception of the work.
The installations also engage with light: in spaces with natural light, the intensity and tone of the colours shift depending on the weather and time of day. In bright sunlight, for instance, the foil sheets can appear light—both in weight and in colour—while at nightfall they may seem thick, heavy, and viscous.
The use of reflective materials is essential to Billet’s exploration of how light can be visualized. Equally important, however, is the repeated gesture of showing light again and again through mirrored surfaces, each time in response to the specific spatial context. In doing so, the artist reveals the ever-changing conditions of light and environment, and underscores the impossibility of fully capturing light.
