Yann Freichels (°1996 Grüfflingen, Belgium) is among the most exceptional young talents to come out of Belgium's Eastern Cantons. Freichels works and lives in Grüfflingen, Belgium, which is close to Eupen and
completed his education in painting at the “École supérieure des arts de la ville de Liège” (ESAVL) in 2020.
The rough and history-rich environment permeates his works. ‘It is borderland anyway,’ he says. 'On the one hand, there is the historical border with Prussia, and on the other, still the joint between Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and French-speaking Belgium. ‘La merditude des choses’ - the sadness of things. This is how Freichels sums up one of the common threads in his work. In his paintings, he often portrays people on whom the harshness of life has a hold, ‘people on the edge’, as he himself says.
