The Frans Masereel Centrum combines an international residency program for contemporary artists with an innovative project and exhibition schedule. Located in a secluded wooded area, and equipped with a dynamic printmaking workshop, it is one of the most challenging and inspiring environments for visual artists to investigate printed matter in all its aspects, or to embrace it as part of a broader artistic practice. Critics, writers, curators and academics also use our facilities, to conduct theoretical research in the private context of an active arts center. Every year, approximately 50 artists and critics are selected by an external jury. Additionally, the center also runs a well-received program exclusively for students from national and international art colleges and universities.
Exhibitions include solo projects, thematic group exhibitions as well as the long-term series "Curating the Woodland". Every year, a number of Affiliated Artists are also invited, while other artists are given a commission. Punctual collaborations with artists or partnering institutions happen as well.
Since its inauguration in 1972, the Frans Masereel Centrum has grown into a unique, internationally acclaimed working and meeting place with specific attention to development and creation, dialogue, research and knowledge transfer, as well as international and intergenerational cooperation. By systematically including work from each resident in its collection, the Frans Masereel Centrum now manages more than 20,000 pieces.
