Whether it is his insatiable drive, or the agile nature of his work, Antwerp based artist Dennis Tyfus (°1979) is unstoppable. There’s no measure to the techniques he uses, the characters he forms, the questions he raises, the collaborations he initiates or the spaces he activates.

His versatile oeuvre doesn’t occur by chance but often is a playful response to societal trends and daily routines. His own creative process also serves as a resource. Rather than frustrating him, Tyfus gets inspired by the technical limitations he encounters.

By imposing seemingly bizarre rules and restrictions, both on himself and on others, the artist sees these limitations as an artistic leeway that he temporarily bends to his will. In an absurdist style that is reminiscent of the work of Wim T. Schippers and Dieter Roth, Tyfus gives a new meaning to the freedom of choice that is so cherished today. The result is a take on life itself in which the possibilities are endless and the number of participants unlimited.

Also, in his newest exhibition “Don’t Tell Me Not To Tell You What To Do” at de Warande Tyfus doesn’t let conventions intervene. In a strongly imposed route he introduces different installations, sculptures, pencil drawings and videos to the visitor. Nevertheless, for the duration of the exhibition, the artist leaves room for multiple sidetracks. By organizing concerts, lectures, debates and performances, tattoo sessions and unforeseen activities the artist makes full use of the exhibition space. This way a never ending dance marathon arises.
