Fifty years after Jef Geys produced a folder of prints within the framework of MASEREEL in 1972 – for which he invited artists such as Marcel Broodthaers and Toon Tersas, among others – MASEREEL launched a contemporary follow-up to this historic initiative in 2022 with the biennial
Hibernus. For each edition, four artists are invited to develop new work, for a fee, in MASEREEL’s extensive printmaking studio; these works are then offered up for sale in limited editions or even as unique pieces. MASEREEL uses the proceeds from the sale to further develop its artistic activities. Like the first two editions, Hibernus #3 deliberately departs from the physical framework of the original sales folder and from the high print run. Instead, the focus shifts to autonomous artistic processes, with room for research and experimentation, and curiosity about what doesn’t yet exist. The new doesn’t emerge after, but grows out of the darkness.
