Hold the Space - Character Sheet

The long-term project Hold the Space, which coincides with the construction of MASEREEL's new artist pavilion, consists of a series of monographic interventions by alumns.

Every two months, MASEREEL invites a former resident to create new work in our studios and elaborate a bespoke presentation for a specially designed showcase at the front of our building.

Each collaboration thus results in a unique edition, realised in a limited edition of 10 copies and available exclusively in the bookstore. Sales of each edition go directly to the artist.

For Hold the Space, Anthe Hermans designed a unique and visually playful Character Sheet that deviates from the traditional, standardized format. The questions range from light, dreamy topics to subtle references to resistance and violence. These inquiries encourage participants to create complex, resilient characters that challenge the stereotype of the passive victim. The visual elements of the sheet enhance the experience. A spiral structure guides participants through the questions, while blank spaces allow room for personal interpretation. This design stimulates reflection and makes the process of entering and leaving the fictional world more tangible.

In the display case, Hermans printed her character sheet into a large fabric design, combined with stickers and other references to the role-playing world she has created. The display case functions almost like a collection box, making the research tangible and inviting further reflection.
