"Ik ben geen kindje, ik ben een grote jongen"

“I AM NOT A CHILD, I AM A BIG BOY”

Max Dreezen’s second solo exhibition in De Wael 15, “I am not a child, I am a big boy”, is an intimate and multifaceted portrait of his love for life and art. The title, taken from a statement by his godchild, reveals the core of his approach: the importance of wonder, but with a mature awareness.

Love is the foundation of Dreezen’s work. He paints what is dear to him: his family, his godchild, art history, teaching and the daily moments or objects that shape his world. Memories and subtle symbolism run like a common thread through his paintings, which show a soft, tender look at life.

Dreezen uses classical compositions and iconography as anchors but translates them to his own context. At the same time, he maintains a critical view of the art world. He investigates how art is experienced today and how interactive additions can shift the focus from the content to the packaging.

Colour is a powerful element in this. Dreezen uses intense colours that not only emphasise the playfulness of his work, but also reflect on the consumption of art. The bright colours seduce the eye, but carry a critical undertone: how do these visual stimuli influence our view? Do they enrich the art experience, or do they impoverish its depth?

With personal stories and subtle reflections, Dreezen manages to find a balance between intimacy and sharpness. His paintings are an invitation to look longer and to reflect on what really moves us.
