Jacuzzi of Despair

Sharon Van Overmeiren (°1985, Antwerp) makes sculptures in ceramics, bronze and beeswax. Her work is a playful collage of forms and motifs that she draws from diverse sources of inspiration: from classical antiquity and medieval heraldry to pop culture and pre-Columbian sculpture. This creates what she calls ‘fictional sculptures’: figures whose story or identity can never be captured in one go.

The exhibition ‘Jacuzzi of Despair’ explores the ‘circle of life’ and takes you through the different stages of life, from the birth to death, the end - which at the same time heralds a new beginning. The cyclical theme of reincarnation connects the works and reflects itself in the layers of meaning they evoke.
