"When I was invited as an artist-in-residence in the Warande, they were working on the expansion of the Schouwburg and the building had undergone some major changes in the years before. I found it interesting to investigate how the building grew with its time and how that caused shifts in how the building was used and experienced.
So I went looking for the rhythm of the building. For me it is both about the physical building and about its daily use by the many visitors. I have tried to familiarize myself with the building by moving as far as possible within the walls of the Warande. I have concentrated on the transitions and passageways, the places where you go from one room to another through doors and stairs. I visited both public places and non-public places and then mapped them out. In this way there was an alternative reading of the building that shows how one can move between the rooms.
I also made a calendar of a full season in de Warande. It has become a time document that documents the multitude of different activities within one building in the form of routes.
All together it has become a work that wants to celebrate the building. "
Sofie Van der Linden was artist-in-residence of the Warande in the 2017-2018 season. Maybe you already saw her drawings on the cover of our brochure of the current season. Maybe you ran into her - unknowingly - somewhere in our building. Sofie spent a lot of time in the last year in the theatre, concert hall, exhibitions hall, classrooms, corridors, cellars and so on to draw. From 23 March on, her drawings can be seen in our ‘Luifelzaal’. At the same time she will present her book in which she bundles all her Warande drawings.
