The first solo exhibition of Paulo Monteiro (b. 1961, Sāo Paulo) at Zeno X Gallery. Brazilian artist Paulo Monteiro has created paintings, drawings and sculptures since the late seventies. In the eighties he co-founded Casa 7, a group with artists who wanted to revitalize Brazilian painting. Most of Monteiro’s paintings are covered by a thick layer of oil paint that takes up the entire surface. Subtle arrangements of colours and shapes result in gracious compositions, with an important focus on the materiality of the work. For the artist, paint does not primarily function as a colour but as a material. The line - in all its forms - has been an important subject matter in both his sculpture, drawing and painting practice.
