With 'This is Where I left Myself', Fred Michiels returns to Eva Steynen Gallery for his fourth solo exhibition, continuing a dialogue that has unfolded through successive bodies of work. Presenting a new series of paintings in which layers of colour, memory and visual fragments are transformed into an intensely physical form of abstraction.

Michiels is a painter who has always been interested in what happens between recognition and abstraction. His practice draws on an extensive visual vocabulary—painting, drawing, architecture, music, art history and fragments encountered in everyday life—which he subjects to a continuous process of transformation. Images are not reproduced but taken apart, layered, interrupted and reassembled until their original meaning gives way to rhythm, colour and movement. His paintings invite the eye to move constantly between what appears to be on the surface and what seems to lie behind it.
